What Does Your Colon Do?
Now that you know what colon cleansing is, you might be wondering what exactly is your colon
and what does it do? The colon basically consists of the portion of the large intestine that runs from the cecum down to the rectum.
The large intestine’s purpose is to store water and reabsorb it when it needs to. It also helps to maintain electrolytes and water balance. The colon is made up of 5 different parts, each with a different function and purpose:
Ascending Colon: The ascending colon, on the right side of the abdomen, is about 25 cm long.
Transverse Colon: The transverse colon is the part of the colon from the hepatic flexure to the spelnix flexure.
Descending Colon: The descending colon is the part of the colon from the splenic flexure to the beginning of the sigmoid colon.
Sigmoid Colon: The sigmoid colon is the part of the large intestine after the descending colon and before the rectum.
Rebundant Colon: One variation on the normal anatomy of the colon occurs when extra loops form, resulting in a longer than normal organ
